Chapter 9

It was getting dark and Naila had stayed with me all day. I had returned to the house for the blanket and we lay on it and spoke about all the things she wanted to know about my world. I wanted to know about hers but she insisted that she should go first, so I gave her the opportunity thinking that a couple of questions later, it would be my turn. Her quest for knowledge about humans and the way we lived led us to topics that should not be discussed with another human let alone a mermaid. I had to take a break to get dinner then ate by the lake with Naila. She wanted to eat everything on my plate, but I was not sure what would make her sick so I only gave her mashed potatoes and carrots. She went crazy whenever she tasted human food. I had never laughed so hard in my life.

Naila loved to play, she loved to talk, and she loved to listen. She was a super fast learner and she watched my lips and sucked up every new word – every bit of information that came from my lips. I enjoyed spending time with her. We lay on the blanket looking at each other and she was so enchanting and beautiful.

"So are you a princess in your world?" I asked.

"What's a princess?"

"The daughter of a king."

"Yes, I am."

"Is your family still looking for you?"

"I'm sure they are, but the ocean is big…," she paused.

"Massive," I said, giving her a more appropriate word and opening my arms to show her.

"It's massive, so it is not easy to find someone when they're lost."

"Yeah, the same thing goes for us."

"Why do your people go to the sea world and do so much damage?" she asked.

"Some people are curious about the sea formations and the creatures that live in it the same way you are curious about humans and the way we live here. However, humans are not all good and considerate, but that's not the majority…they're a small number," I said because whenever I spoke, Naila did not understand all of the words, but she understood the context.

"That's what I tried to tell my father."

"When I first saw you in the water and your head went below, I was shocked, but I thought a woman was swimming around and ended up in this part of the lake."

"No one ever comes to your part of the lake."

"That's why I was shocked to see someone in the water," I said. "The next time I saw you and you swam away, your tail went in the air and that's when I knew it was a mermaid. I ran out of the house then went for a ladder and a can of paint and I sprayed the cameras…."

"Cameras?"

"It's like a set of eyes that can see everything, and I did not want anyone to see you, so I covered them. I wanted to protect you because if you're caught…Naila…it would be bad.
